Root Canal

Endodontic treatment is performed to eliminate infection of a tooth and surrounding bone structure.  Endodontic treatment consists of removal of the nerve and blood vessels, using tiny files and irrigation solution to hollow out tooth canals and decontaminate them.  The hollowed canals are filled with gutta percha (special filling material to seal the canals), followed by a filling material to seal the remaining tooth structure.

After this procedure the tooth is classified as “dead”. In most cases a crown is recommended to help strengthen the remaining tooth and to prevent breakage, since without blood flow it is vulnerable to fracture.
